About Us...

We are a volunteer collective of young people that want to see the South Asian American youth voice have a united progressive voice to make politicians listen to us. We come from all realms of the activist community and see a need to bring skills from the progressive movement to the South Asian community, and have decided to do just that.




South Asian American Voting Youth Board Bios

Many of you folks have been wondering *who* exactly is helping out with SAAVY?

Our project is a youth led effort with 10 talented board members, all under the age of 32, to empower South Asian youth 18-25 to get politically organized. Our youth led board has a diverse background in experiences & skills as well as a diverse South Asian heritage, reflecting what we feel what it means to be a South Asian American.

SAAVY Executive Board

Aditi Vaidya works as Program Director at the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition. She was previously working with the Jenifer Altman Foundation and the Environmental Health and Justice Program of the Mitchell Kapor Foundation. Aditi is a health scientist, DJ, trainer, and advocate for environmental justice. She obtained her Masters in Public Health in environmental and occupational health and has worked with the environmental justice organizations across the country including Southwest Network for Environmental and Economic Justice, the Just Transition Alliance, and the Southwest Workers Union.

Darshan Khalsa is the Program Manager at the National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development, an organization that advocates for the unique community development needs of AAPI communities. In 2003, Darshan founded the Racial Justice Campaign Fund, a program at Progressive Majority that works to support and elect progressive candidates of color. Darshan is a lawyer and has been organizing for eight years.

Madhuri Kommareddi was born and raised in Flint, Michigan and graduated from Northwestern with a Political Science major/Asian American Studies minor. She has worked fulltime on a number of electoral campaigns in the Chicago area as well as at a Democratic political consulting firm. Madhuri currently works on policy development for a freshman U.S. Senator.

Nina Baliga graduated from New York University with degrees in Sociology and Environmental Studies. She began her political career heading up Florida PIRG's Clean Water Campaigns. She then moved on to Canvass Direct the Miami office of American Coming Together, where she mobilized tens of thousands of voters in the largest voter contact program in history. Nina currently works as a Research Analyst for SEIU Local 11, organizing condominium workers in South Florida.

Trina DasGupta is an experienced organizer who has worked on a range of issures, including HIV/AIDS awareness, intercultural dialogue, women in leadership, and, of course, youth voting. Her passion in life is using media and pop culture for social change, so she's currently learning the ropes at MTV Networks. Trina is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a B.S. in Business and Public Policy and a B.A. in Communications.
